What is a co-op? A co-op is more than a grocery store. It is the chance to be a member-owner with voting power to ensure that the core values are upheld. It is an opportunity to be a part of your community and promote sustainability, social justice, responsible consumerism, and healthy living. Consumer cooperatives have been around for centuries. First started in England in 1844. Today, food co-ops are seeing a renewal as many consumers are becoming more aware of the importance of knowing where food comes from, buying locally, and being a member of the community—both local and global. When someone becomes a member-owner, they buy into the co-op, are given democratic voting rights, and encouraged to take part in the store by volunteering time. 7 Internationally Recognized Cooperative Principles: Voluntary and Open Membership Democratic Member Control Member Economic Participation Autonomy and Independence Education, Training, and Information Cooperation Among Cooperatives Concern for Community If there are any further questions regarding what a co-op does, just stop in and we’d be happy to talk to you!
